Pokémon Cafe Japan Reservations: Booking Tips, Cancellations & Best Seats (2026)

Complete guide to making a Pokémon Cafe reservation

Is it really that difficult to get a reservation at the Pokémon Cafe?

The hugely popular Pokémon Cafe requires advance reservations.

Access surges as soon as reservations open, and the most popular time slots tend to fill up first.

Since the 2026 renovation, the way reservation slots are released has also changed, and the previous rule of “6:00 p.m. 31 days before your visit” is no longer being used.

In this article, I’ll walk you through the current reservation rules, the actual booking process, useful tips for securing a table, and when to look for last-minute cancellations if your preferred date is already fully booked, based on my own experience!

This guide is based primarily on the Tokyo (Nihombashi) location. While the basic reservation process is the same for both Tokyo and Osaka, details such as seating areas and availability may differ by location.

Pokémon Cafe Reservation Rules

First, let’s take a look at the current basic reservation rules.

Reservations for the Pokémon Cafe can be made only through the official reservation website.

Reservations open Currently, reservations for the entire following month are released at 6:00 p.m. on the first day of each month
※Dates and booking periods are subject to change
Booking deadline 8:00 a.m. on the day of your visit
Party size 1–6 guests (children aged 0 and above must also be included)
Online cancellation deadline Until 10:00 p.m. on the day before your visit (call the café for same-day cancellations)
Changing party size Not permitted after the reservation is completed
Payment when booking Not required for a table-only reservation (unless purchasing reservation-exclusive merchandise)
Dining time 90 minutes

Reservations are currently released for the entire following month at 6:00 p.m. on the first day of the month

Previously, reservations opened at 6:00 p.m. exactly 31 days before the date of your visit. Since the 2026 renovation, however, the release schedule has changed.

Recent examples include:

  • August 2026 → reservations opened at 6:00 p.m. on July 1
  • September 2026 → reservations opened at 6:00 p.m. on August 1
  • October 2026 → reservations opened at 6:00 p.m. on September 1

In other words, the current system releases one full month of reservations at 6:00 p.m. on the first day of the previous month.

The system may change again in the future, so be sure to check the NEWS section of the official website for the latest booking schedule before making your reservation.

Reservations Are Extremely Competitive! Check the Process in Advance

Traffic surges at 6:00 p.m. when Pokémon Cafe reservations open!

Popular slots, especially weekends and dinner times, can fill up very quickly, so it is best not to see the reservation screen for the first time at exactly 6:00 p.m.

Knowing the basic process in advance can help you avoid getting confused while trying to book.

From here, I’ll explain the process in five steps, following the actual reservation screens!

Later in this article, I’ll also share actual data showing when cancellation slots appeared after the café was fully booked!

Although the official guidance states that advance reservations are required, if there is a same-day cancellation, the café may offer the table to walk-in guests.

Entrance to the renovated Pokémon Cafe Tokyo and the cancellation waiting line

A cancellation waiting line is still available outside the renovated café, and there were many people waiting there when I visited.

However, waiting in line does not guarantee that you will get a table, so securing an advance reservation is still the best option.

Step 1: Choose a Location — Tokyo or Osaka

On the reservation homepage, select either Tokyo (Nihombashi) or Osaka (Shinsaibashi). The booking process is the same for both locations.

For this visit, I booked the Tokyo (Nihombashi) location!

Step 2: Agree to the Terms and Conditions

After selecting the café, you will see important information about prohibited activities and the cancellation policy.

The page includes rules such as the prohibition of reservation reselling or booking on behalf of others, as well as information about same-day cancellations. Read through the details before continuing.

Step 3: Complete the reCAPTCHA Image Verification

Next comes Google’s image verification system, which is used to prevent automated bookings.

The screen may be a little difficult to see, but if you make a mistake it can take time for the page to reload, so focus on selecting the correct images rather than rushing.

Be aware that you may be sent back to this verification screen not only at the beginning, but also if you take too long during the booking process.

Step 4: Select Your Party Size and Check Availability

To check table availability, you first need to select the number of guests in your party (1–6 people).

Your party size affects both availability and the seating areas you can select. It also cannot be changed after the reservation is confirmed, so choose carefully.

Babies and young children must also be included in the total number of guests.

Once you have selected your party size, availability will be displayed in calendar format.

Select a date with availability and you will then see the reservation status for each time slot, showing whether tables are available or fully booked.

There are three seating areas, and the options shown depend on your party size.

Area A Area B Area C
2–4 guests 1–2 guests 1–6 guests

With three seating areas suddenly appearing on the screen, you may be wondering, What are the differences between them? And which one should I choose?

Unfortunately, the official website does not provide detailed information about the location or characteristics of each seating area.

Which Seating Area Is Best?

So in August 2026, I visited the renovated Pokémon Cafe Tokyo in person and checked the current layout.

Floor map of the renovated Pokémon Cafe Tokyo

Although you choose from Areas A, B and C when booking, the café itself is actually divided into four rows, and the reservation areas do not correspond one-to-one with the Pokémon-themed sections inside the café.

According to a staff member I spoke with, the basic seating arrangement for each area is fixed, although it may change without notice.

After checking the seats and the view of the Pikachu show in person, these were my impressions:

  • A: Best for guests who prioritize comfortable seating. All seats are sofas.
  • B: Best for guests who want to see Pikachu up close.
  • C: About one-third of the seats are very close to the show, while the remaining two-thirds are sofa seats.

I had seen some recommendations suggesting that Area A was the best choice, so that is what I booked. But after actually watching the show, my personal reaction was, “Maybe I should have chosen B instead.”

The post-renovation Pikachu show takes place near the large screen in the center of the café, and guests are not allowed to stand up to watch it.

As a result, your distance from Pikachu and how well you can see the show depend partly on the seating area you choose.

You Cannot Choose a Specific Table

When booking, you can choose only your seating area — A, B or C.

You cannot specify which table within that area you will be assigned.

Tables may also be combined depending on the size of the group, so individual table numbers and exact locations may vary.

Choosing Area B, for example, does not guarantee that you will be seated directly in front of the screen. Think of the area selection as a general guide rather than a guarantee.

Step 5: Choose an Available Slot and Enter Your Details

Now let’s move on to the final step of the reservation process.

Once you click your preferred time slot, the selected table will be temporarily held for 15 minutes.

During those 15 minutes, you simply need to complete the following two steps:

  1. Enter your personal information, including your name and phone number
  2. Complete email verification by entering the verification code sent to your email address

A confirmation email should arrive shortly afterward. Check the details and save the email, and your reservation is complete!

I won’t go into detail here, but you can also order original Pokémon Cafe merchandise during the reservation process.

Some items are not available for purchase at the café itself, so if you see something you want, consider ordering it when you make your reservation! (Limit: three items per person. Accepted cards: VISA / Mastercard / JCB / American Express / Diners Club / Discover)

Couldn’t Get a Reservation? Try This Trick: Look for Last-Minute Cancellations!

Since international tourism rebounded, getting a reservation at the Pokémon Cafe seems to have become even more competitive.

Even on weekdays, nearly all seats tend to be taken within about five minutes of reservations opening.

But even if your preferred date is already fully booked, you do not necessarily have to give up.

The key time is around 10:00 p.m. on the day before your visit — roughly one hour before and after.

The Pokémon Cafe allows online cancellations until 10:00 p.m. on the day before the reservation, and I found that a number of tables tended to reappear around this time.

I monitored the reservation site over two or three days in June 2026 and saw available slots repeatedly appear and disappear during this period.

Here is one actual example showing when availability appeared and for how many guests.

Time Availability
9:40 p.m. Availability for 1–2 guests
9:50 p.m. Availability for 1 guest
10:30 p.m. Availability for 1 guest
10:50 p.m. Availability for 1–2 guests

I had expected that no more tables would appear after 10:00 p.m., but since slots continued to reappear until shortly before 11:00 p.m., there seems to be some delay between a cancellation being made and the table becoming available again on the reservation site.

There may be fewer cancellations on weekends or during school holidays such as summer and winter breaks, but if you are determined to visit the Pokémon Cafe, this is definitely worth trying!

Compared with before the renovation, availability for groups of three or more seems to appear less often. However, when checking repeatedly, I did occasionally find availability for a party of six.

Interestingly, when I changed the party size to four at that exact moment, the site showed the café as fully booked. (Availability for six guests remained visible afterward.)

There is no way to know for certain, but it may be that the number of guests on the cancelled reservation sometimes determines which party sizes are able to book the newly released table.

What Should You Do in These Situations?

Want to Hold a Second-Choice Date as Well?

If you are deciding between more than one date, it is possible to make reservations for multiple dates by using different email addresses.

Want to Sit Next to Friends?

If you make reservations at the same time using the same name, time slot and seating area, the café appears to seat groups next to each other in most cases.

However, this may not always be possible depending on how busy the café is, so contacting the café in advance is recommended if sitting together is important.

Booking for a Large Group of Seven or More

For larger groups, you will need to split the group into reservations of at least two guests each, while keeping the reservation name, time and seating area the same.

You must then contact the Pokémon Cafe separately if you would like the group to be seated close together.

Important Notes About Pokémon Cafe Reservations

Here are some additional points to keep in mind when making a reservation, based on information from the official website.

【Important Information】

  • The café operates on a reservation basis. Please make your reservation through the reservation website by 8:00 a.m. on the day you wish to visit.
  • If you wish to make reservations for multiple dates, you cannot use the same email address for more than one reservation. Please prepare a different email address for each booking.
  • The email containing the verification code required to authenticate your email address will be sent from “@mail-pokemon-cafe.jp”. Please make sure your email settings allow you to receive messages from this domain.
  • Seats may be offered to walk-in guests only when same-day cancellations occur.
  • The number of guests cannot be changed after the reservation has been completed.
  • You can check your reservation status using the “Check Reservation” section at the bottom of each café’s page on the reservation website. Please enter your reservation number using half-width alphanumeric characters.

Final Thoughts

  • The Pokémon Cafe requires advance reservations
  • When booking, you need to choose not only the number of guests and time, but also a seating area
  • Reservations are highly competitive. Your best chances are when bookings first open or around 10:00 p.m. on the day before your visit

So that is my guide to making a reservation at the hugely popular Pokémon Cafe.

Under the current system, reservations for the following month are released at 6:00 p.m. on the first day of each month, and popular dates and time slots can fill up very quickly. Checking the booking process beforehand and being ready to proceed as soon as reservations open can make the process much easier.

If you still cannot secure your preferred date and time, one useful trick is to check for cancellation slots between roughly 9:40 p.m. and 10:50 p.m. on the day before your visit.

Of course, there may be days when no cancellations appear at all, so it is best to think of this as a lucky opportunity rather than a guarantee. If that still does not work, your final option is to join the same-day cancellation waiting line at the café.

You can try joining the reservation rush at 6:00 p.m., watch for cancellations the night before, or try your luck with a same-day opening.

With the right timing and a little persistence, you still have a chance even when the café initially appears fully booked.

Good luck, and enjoy your visit!
